Here's an essay that Clark 2nd grader Alexandria Copper wrote for an contest sponsored by Williams Christmas Trees. Williams donated the tree you see in the background and offered to deliver it to the home of the winner of the essay contest. Here's what Alexandria said:

A New Christmas Tree
By Alexandria Copper

I have seen my mother look at a lot of pretty Christmas trees. She always says “Look! This is a pretty Christmas tree.” Then she stares at it for a while. She moves closer and closer to it so she can see what it looks like up close.

“Let’s get that one!”

But she always says “No, we can’t.”

My mom is always giving; but no one ever gives to her. I would like to win this tree so I can see my mom’s eyes light up like the Christmas tree. Finally she will be receiving a gift and the gift will be from me!

Pictures from the 2nd grade Thanksgiving Feast have been posted to smugmug. You can see the photos here.

For more than 25 years, Clark Elementary School 2nd graders have studied the colonial period and Thanksgiving during the month of November.  Each year the unit ends with a wonderful lunch time program as students and their families participate in an authentic Thanksgiving feast.

Students are dressed as Native Americans or Pilgrims for the day as they prepare for this lunchtime event.  Parents are asked to provide the different Thanksgiving foods for each classroom, such as turkey, dressing, green beans, sweet potatoes, and bread.  Students eat standing and in silence using their “trenchers” instead of plates.  The best part for many kids is they get to forego table manners and use their hands as they did in colonial days.

Teaching students in many different ways is the norm at Clark School.  Students in 2nd grade have read stories, watched videos, read poems and done hands-on activities all related to colonial times and the Thanksgiving tradition.  The culminating activity of an authentic Thanksgiving feast as it would be in colonial times is just another excellent way to reteach the concepts that were studied all month.

A Clark second grader asks a panel of experts from  the PTHS Kentucky Junior Historical Society about what colonists ate day-to-day in addition to corn.  Second grade students used Skype to interview members of the PTHS Kentucky Junior Historical Society and discover details about life in colonial times.
