A Tradition of Excellence

Since it opened in 1980, Paducah Middle School has united students in the "Tornado" spirit -- in classroom and extracurricular activities.

To ease the transition from elementary school, sixth-graders are grouped in teams with fewer teachers and class changes. Seventh and eighth grades are also organized by teams for more flexibility in program planning of cross-curricular activities.

We offer a variety of pre-AP services for gifted students. They include honors classes, the Duke Talent Identification Program and extracurricular Governor's Cup, Math Counts and Odyssey of the Mind academic competitions.

Four "Encore" classes are offered on a nine-week rotation: art, physical education, drama, and music.

Photo of the Day: Explore Test Camp

Dr. Danny Butler talks with students about the Explore test, the ACT, and how they relate to pursuing a career in medicine.  Over forty students who were part of the Paducah Middle Explore Test Prep camp spent the final day of the two week session talking with educators and professionals about how the Explore and ACT connect to their respective fields.

The EXPLORE program is a high school readiness examination designed to help eighth graders explore a broad range of options for their future. The exam assesses four subjects (English, mathematics, reading and science) and provides needs assessments and other components to help students plan for high school and beyond.

Paducah Middle Online Summer Book Club Continues Building Reading Skills

Paducah Middle Reading teacher Megan Story has used a $500 grant from the Community Foundation of West Kentucky to help fund a summer reading program for struggling readers at Paducah Middle School.

"I plan to use the funds to support an online summer book club for the students I have served in RTI Reading during the 2011-12 school year," said Storey. "Since data shows students can maintain and increase their reading levels when they read consistently, I hope to use this program to help our readers continue to read through the summer."

Members of the book club could choose between the Coretta Scott King award winning book Miracle’s Boys by Jacqueline Woodson or Newberry Honor book Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm. They will read for 10 weeks and blog with Storey throughout the summer, discussing the books and completing comprehension activities.

The students' parents will blog separately with Storey about ways to help their student as well as technical reading strategies for adults. The goal of this joint venture between the teacher, parents, and students is to increase student reading levels during the summer months, increase parent awareness of reading issues, and increase interaction between teachers, parents, and students.

Students who complete the entire ten week program will be entered into a drawing for an iPad in August. Parents who complete the ten week program will be entered into a drawing for a gas card also in August.
